This weeks art club looked at expressive art. The children were encouraged to think outside the box and draw what they felt rather than what they saw.
Several different styles of music were played and the children began to draw, it soon became apparent that the children were struggling with the task. The children were then encouraged to close their eyes and draw with their non dominant hand. It was interesting to see that the younger children were more willing to draw from their imagination and found the session more enjoyable, whereas the older children were more conscious of making mistakes.

The group were then moved outside for some expressive painting. Long rolls of paper were stretched out on the grass outside the library, after which they were given Holli paint powder and poster paint in spray bottles. The children were excited to get busy (and messy) with the spraying, they quickly created two large pieces of work which will be included in the exhibition.
The children enjoying spraying the paper with lots of expressive lines and textures. Janet Waters (library volunteer) commented;
"Ooh that's very Jackson Pollockesque, his early jazz era I believe"
The children appeared to really enjoy the latter part of the session particularly, however next weeks session will be a lot less messy and a little calmer with Easter crafts.
