Going into outer space with RB

On the morning of Friday 8th March 2019 the Be Anything Do Anything project were invited into Miss Haynes' Reception class (RB) of Woodlands Primary Academy, Bradwell, where outer space artworks were created.

The session commenced with a brief introduction to the project (see slides shown at the end of this blog) and the children were all asked what they wanted to be when they grew up; there were quite a few police officers, hairdressers, a teacher even a batman! The children were asked what jobs they considered to be girl or boy jobs, the majority thought that builders and firefighters should be boys and hairdressers and nurses are girls, however when questioned about police there was a 50/50 split between girls and boys.

The children seemed excited to have their finished work shown in an art gallery and were keen to get creating, so a brief explanation of the activities was given to the class and the children got busy.

The children had a variety of things to do within the hour session;

  • Hand print aliens along with decorate your own space ships

  • Black Hole spirals where the children were given a selection of space themed stickers to decorate pre-cut spirals

  • Colouring sheets of job roles

The children enjoyed getting their hands (and other things) messy when creating their hand-prints and chose from a selection of different coloured paints, a few children decided to mix colours to create a variety of alien beings. Some children decided to do more than one handprint on the provided paper to create some interesting aliens to decorate the exhibition space wall. Once the paintings were dry the googly eyes were added to bring the handprints to life.

When it came to decorating the spaceships the children were given a selection of sticky foam shapes, the option to paint or colour with crayon. Many children decided to use the sticky shapes and used their imagination to combine more than one spaceship cut-out to create a larger space vehicle for their alien beings to travel.

The friendly visitors from another world will add a colourful and fun addition to the space themed gallery area.

Above are the spiral black hole creations; the children enjoyed using the provided space themed stickers to decorate the spiral cut-outs, with some children adding further decoration using pencils and crayons. It is intended that the creations will add a colourful, and three dimensional aspect to the display, where visitors will be immersed into the world of space through the eyes of children.

Here are some examples of the colouring the children completed during the session, the smiling faces the children applied to the characters were very pleasing, no matter how many eyes they had!

Below is a copy of the slideshow the children were shown at the beginning of the session;

Overall the children appeared engaged and enjoyed the activities on offer, they particularly enjoyed the sticker activities the most of all the works. The artworks created by the class will prove to be a colourful and fun addition to the exhibition in May.

Thank you RB for welcoming the project into your classroom, hopefully you and your families will enjoy seeing your works on display and maybe take part in other activities planned for Saturday 4th May at Skippings gallery.

The exhibition will be open to all from 1st - 4th May 2019 11am - 2pm at Skippings Gallery, 133 King Street, Great Yarmouth, NR30 2PQ.
